Wilhelm Kåge(1889-1960), was a pivotal Swedish artist and designer, celebrated as the ceramic king and artistic leader of the Gustavsberg Porcelain Factory. He created his Argenta stoneware series in the 1920's and it was presented to the public at the 1930 Stockholm Exhibition where it became a sales sensation. The Argenta series is known for its distinctive matte, emerald-mottled, turquoise glaze and hand-painted(using a proprietary silver-paste), inlaid/overlaid designs. The dish is square shaped with rounded corners and features a silver, majestic lion in the center, accented by a decorative border. The silver backstamp is marked with "Gustavsberg", its anchor logo, "Argenta", form # "1196", Roman numeraI "i" denoting size or variance, and "Made in Sweden". c.1930s-1950s.
