These cutters (also known as sarota or kacip), are/were used throughout Southeast Asia for the preparation of Betel Quid Chew. Betel nut chewing is an ancient practice, a sign of hospitality and an important part of many ceremonies. The nuts from the Areca Tree are placed in the trough of the cutters. The ground nuts are then combined with lime powder(produced by scraping seashells), and wrapped in betel leaves. The result is betel quid, which is mildly narcotic and a modest stimulant. It is chewed for hours and constant use often results in bright-red teeth and gums. The cutters are typically made from iron and each region has its own design. The smaller pair are most likely from Indonesia and are unique and a rare find. They date back to the late 19th-early 20th century and have an animal motif. The larger-blade, nut cutters were more typically found and used in households. Please check our listing for the set of 16th century Vietnamese lime pots.
