Pieter Groeneveldt (1889-1982), was a renowned Dutch pottery artist. He was famous for his development of innovative and textured glazes. This piece was produced during his freelance factory period,1925-1972, and is one of the "Groeneveldt Monsters". It exhibits the travetjin (travertine) effect, a rough surface with a dark surface, which he introduced in the 1950's. Brilliant orange contrasts with the dark textured surround of a primitive and whimsical carabao or water buffalo. Groeneveldt was a contemporary of other noted modern ceramic artists such as Fantoni, Gambone, Andrae, Brouwer, and Lanooij. The bowl is signed by the artist and was crafted in Holland. c. 1960's. It is in excellent condition and a rare find. Measures 10" x 6" x 2".
