A rare historical find. This antique copper haystack jug was produced in 1898 for Queen Victoria's British Colonial Government which presided over the African "Gold Coast Colony"(modern day Ghana). The inner rim is stamped with a pewter hallmark, verifying that it was made during the reign of Queen Victoria. It features the initials VR(Victoria Regina), and a shield topped by a crown. The jug was used to measure and distribute ale in 1-gallon increments typically to each member of the staff and regiment. The words "One Gallon" are etched on one side and the other side is etched with the Royal Crown symbol, "Gold Coast" and 1898. The haystack jug was aptly named for its wide based shape and large spout. A large, riveted handle balanced out the jug. In excellent antique condition with wear consistent with age and use. Please refer to the photos as they are part of the description. These are actual photos, we do not use AI or photoshop. Approximately 10"H x 11" at the widest point x 9"D.
