Set of 3 small, 16th century Vietnamese pots handcrafted for holding lime powder, which is used in the preparation of Betel Quid Chew. The lime is obtained by scraping seashells and has no connection to the fruit. Betel nut chewing is an ancient practice, a sign of hospitality and an important part of many ceremonies in Southeast Asia. The nuts from the Areca Tree are placed in the trough of a pair of shears or cutters. The ground nuts are then combined with lime powder, and wrapped in betel leaves. The result is betel quid, which is mildly narcotic and a modest stimulant. It is chewed for hours and constant use often results in bright-red teeth and gums. Lime pots were highly valued and typically put in a place of pride in the home. Good "antique condition" consistent with age and use. Please refer to the photos as they are part of the description and include the approximate measurements. Also, please check our listing for the pair of Betel Areca Nut Cutters.
